What is DTH Drilling
DTH drilling is a rotary percussive drilling method. a rotary drill rig( A down-the-hole drill, usually called DTH is mainly a pneumatic-powered rock or ground drill), an air compressor, and a “DTH drill string” are necessary equipment. A “DTH drill string” is made up of DTH drill rods, DTH hammers, and DTH bits. DTH Hammer which is used for generating strong impacts is attached to the bottom of the drill string and a drill bit is attached to the lower end of the DTH hammer, so the percussion mechanism follows the bit down into the drill hole. Being one of the essential parts;
DTH hammer converts air pressure into impact energy, sending impact energy and rotation force to DTH bits at the same time, drill pipes transmit the necessary feed force and rotation to the DTH hammer and DTH bit, as well as compressed air for the DTH hammer. Drill pipes are added to the top of the drill string as the hole gets deeper. The movement of the piston in the DTH hammer is caused by high-pressure compressed air. The shock waves that travel to the bit are passed on to the rock mass through the cutting edges or carbide buttons on the bit. The fast hammer impact breaks hard rock into tiny particles, which results in the formation of rock chips, cuttings are removed from the hole by the air circulated from bottom to top to flush the hole.

DTH Hammer Means
DTH hammer, also called down the hole ( DTH) hammer, is a kind of pneumatic rock drilling tool, DTH hammer is an integral part of the DTH Rig. the difference from others is during DTH drilling process, down the hole hammer always stays at the bottom of the hole, impacting the rock by bit from hammer directly.
The rotating power acting on DTH hammer comes from rotation motor on the drill rig, the pull force comes from feeding device and transfers the energy to DTH hammer through drill pipe; High-pressure air enters into the DTH hammer through DTH drill rods, then run out from DTH hammer bits, exhaust air is used to blow up cuttings from the bottom of hole; The rapid hammering process shreds hard rock into small fragments and dust, they are then blown away by a fluid, be it air, water, or the drilling mud itself.
DTH Drilling technique was created to drill big holes vertically in ground boring drilling and other industrial applications, such as metallurgy, coal, chemical industry, water conservancy, hydropower, highway, railroad, national defense, construction, and other engineering hole-forming operations.

Size:
The selection of DTH hammer size is largely determined by the hole diameter and type of rock formation, 3.5 to 10 inches is the best range of blast holes for DTH drilling. Smaller holes are typically drilled with a top hammer rather than a DTH hammer, and larger holes generally use the rotary drilling technique; DTH rigs drill straight holes with less deviation providing more accurate blasting and better fragmentation as a result.
DTH Hammer Basic Structures
DTH hammer components: Piston, internal cylinder, air distributor, check valve and dth button bits accessories are installed in the external cylinder, the external cylinder has the top sub connected with its connection thread & wrench, there has a drive chuck threaded to the other end of cylinder. There is spline in the drive chuck which is mainly used to transfer feeding and rotational force to the drill bit. The stop ring controls the axial movement of the drill bit, and the check valve is used to prevent cutting and other foreign materials ingress into hammer in case of air supply is stopped. During dth hammer drilling, dth drill bit is pushed into the hammer and pressed against the drive chuck, where the piston directly impacts the drill bit for crushing rock. Hammer starts to clean the bottom by blowing up when dth bit lifts from the hole.
DTH hammer working principle:
1. Dth bit press against the rock.
2. High-pressure air burst through the check valve from the drill pipe, and enters the front cavity of dth hammer.
3. The increase in the front cavity volume pushes the piston to move upward.
4. When the piston moves up to a certain extent, the front cavity deflates and the compressed air enters the back cavity. The piston keeps moving upward because of inertia.
5. When the piston is to a certain extent, due to the compression of the back cavity and the increase of air pressure, the piston starts to impact downward forming an impact stroke. Moves up circles as the above process to achieve impact and complete down the hole hammer drilling.

Working Air Pressure:
Working pressure Standard in metric unit is Bar/pa, there have different units in different countries. In Europe and America, generally use PSI (PSI: Pounds per square inch, P–pound, S-square, I-inch) as a pressure unit.
In China, generally use Kg/cm2 describes Working pressure, so we should know how to exchange pressure in metric. Now we provide three pressure exchanging principles as below:
1bar 14.5psi 1psi~ 0.06895bar 1bar= 0.1mpa=1.0197 Kg/cm
Example: VD 4′ DTH hammers with foot valve, Working pressure is 1.0-2.5 Mpa, exchange to metric unit is 10-25 kg/cm2 as VD 4′ DTH hammer working pressure in metric unit.
Impact Frequency
Impact frequency is the rate of the piston impacting, metric unit is HZ(H).
For example, VD4′ DTH hammer, indicates the impaction frequency as 30HZ In 17 Bar, which means VD4′ DTH hammer’s impaction in per second by 30 times at working pressure 17Bar.
Air Consumption
Air consumption is the pressed air consumed in drilling process, metric unit is m3/min, and there are 2 other units, I/S and CFM. Here we provide the below exchange principle.
1 m3/min=35.4CFM=16.67 I/s
We use the unit of m3/min in specifications. The technical parameters of VD4′ DTH hammer indicate the air consumption is 7,0m3/min by 14Bar input, which means VD4′ DTH hammer consumes around 7.0m3 air when 14Bar per min as input air pressure.
DTH Hammer Lubrication:
It is important that the hammer be continuously supplied with a sufficient amount of the right kind of rock drill oil while it is in use.

An airline lubrication system should be installed, preferably on the drill rig. The lubricator reservoir should be of sufficient capacity to supply the required volume of rock drill oil for a full shift. With this hammer, this might prove impractical, but the capacity should be sufficient for at least half a shift.
This is equally important that the lubricator system must be adjustable and have a visual check to ensure the lubricator does not run out of oil. The amount of lubricating oil should be increased by 50% when drilling with water or foam. When new drill pipes are added to the drill string, it is recommended that a half pint (a quarter of a liter) of rock drill oil is poured into the pipe to provide an excellent internal coating and helps prevent the hammer from running dry at any time. The grade of rock drill oil will be determined by the ambient temperature at the drilling site. If the ambient temperature is between 0 and 25-degree centigrade, then 30-grade oil should be used. If the ambient temperature is greater than 25-degree centigrade, use 50-grade oil.
Instructions for DTH Hammer
1. When the DTH hammer starts drilling, the minimum impact and propulsion force should be used to make the hammer stand against the ground, and open the impact air valve to make the DTH hammer impact work, at this time the hammer does not rotate, DTH drill bit smoothly drill into the rock, and then gradually increase the impact and propulsion force.
2. The thread of the hammer is right-hand. When the rock drilling tools are in the hole, the hammer should always keep the right rotation. Reverse rotation is strictly forbidden to avoid accidents of hammer and drill bit falling into the well.
3. During drilling, keep the hole free of rock slag, and if necessary, carry out strong blowing to clear the hole.
4. When replacing the pressure line and connecting drill pipe, clean the dirt in the pressure and keep the joint of the drill pipe clean to prevent the rock slag and dust from entering the DTH hammer.
5. Reasonable lubrication is the key to ensuring long service life and high efficiency of the hammer, or else it will accelerate the wear of the hammer.
6. During drilling, the dust brought by high-pressure gas, the pollution of the lubricating oil, dust, and mud enters the impactor. It not only reduces the performance of the hammer but also damages the contact surface of each moving part. Therefore, regular maintenance can ensure the continuous and reliable work of the impactor and extend the service life.
